A bit of earth...

My mom came to visit a few weekends ago and we went to see The Book of Mormon, which we both really enjoyed.  However, as is usually the case when my mom visits, there was also a project to complete.  My mother is very handy/crafty and I like to take advantage of her skills by putting her to work when she comes to Wakefield.  She has removed carpet staples, painted, sewed curtains and a bed skirt, and built a headboard.  This project: a raised bed vegetable garden!

We started with the Pioneer Woman's tutorial along with my brother-in-law's helpful advice and suggestions, and then hit up Home Depot.  Well, it must have been our lucky day because not only did the helpful employee tell us he would cut crooked boards for us so that we could buy them for 50 cents, he also proceeded to drill the holes and put the bed together for us right in the store!  I helped out, of course...

We successfully purchased the wood, some soil, and headed home with the hopes that the assembly of the bed would go as smoothly as the buying of it!  After a bunch of trips to the basement for proper tools, and even more trips unloading the dirt and wood from the car, we had a beautiful raised bed in our backyard!

After another trip to Home Depot, and some assistance from another extremely helpful employee, we had vegetables, some stakes, and fencing to ensure our garden will stay safe from vermin or varmits, whoever they may be (we have seen rabbits, turkeys, and have heard rumors of a fisher cat in our yard).

Spike and I have been keeping up with watering it pretty much every day and we've even harvested some cilantro for use on our crispy black bean and feta tacos.  Hopefully the garden will flourish and we'll be able to enjoy all sorts of goodies throughout the summer, which of course we will share with my wonderful mother!
