Halloween is one of Spike and my favorite holidays and for the past four years, we've celebrated by hosting Rose and Aren for dinner and a scary movie night. I've chronicled many of our past menus in great detail, and this year was no different. We had bones with bloody dipping sauce as an appetizer and then ate shredded flesh (pulled pork) and cheesy brains with boogers (mac n cheese with scallions) for dinner. "Cabin in the Woods" was scary enough for Spike and funny enough for me, so we all had a fun evening and there were no nightmares!
On the actual All Hallow's Eve, we raced home to quickly
eat dinner before Christine, Jimmy, Kirby-Rose, and Seamus arrived for trick or treating. It was an uninspired meal of puttanesca pasta but still tasty and it reminded me of the spaghetti dinners we used to have before trick or treating when I was growing up. We greeted an anxious lego man and a Christmas caroler, who were very excited about the mass quantities of candy they soon would receive.
I was feeling a bit left out and old when I saw how excited they were, so I went down to the basement and unearthed a Halloween costume I had always planned on wearing, but never had the opportunity. I was missing a few parts but I think I looked very much like a wingless, stingerless, antennaless bumble bee! Spike definitely looked exactly like the retired softball player he was supposed to be.
Once the doorbells were rung and the candy was received, I returned back to our house to help Spike hand out our candy and carve our pumpkin. This year we went for an upside down jack o'latern, much to the confusion of our trick or treaters. I guess we tricked them!
It was great to see all of the cute costumes and to meet some of
our neighbors, but by the time we retired inside to watch "It's the
Great Pumpkin, Charlie Brown," I was more than ready to call it a night.
Until I start planning next year's menu and costume that is.... which should be any moment now!
