Fall Foodie

I love fall because of the leaves changing, the bright blue sky, the crisp air, but as with most things, it's really all about the food. I think I may have mentioned my obsession with apple cider doughnuts, but there's also pumpkin bread, apple cake, pumpkin roll, German potato salad, and sauerkraut (which, thanks to Oktoberfest, gives me the excuse to eat large amounts of pickled food for dinner).
So of course, for Halloween, I had to come up with a fantastic menu featuring orange and black foods and spooky goodies. I had planned to do a cheddar fondue in a pumpernickel bread bowl (get it? orange and black!), but there was no pumpernickel bread to be found. That's okay, we had pumpernickel pretzels to dip in the fondue, along with potatoes (not black), apples (not black either), summer sausage for Spike (still not black), and of course, pickles (definitely not black). Oh well. It's the thought that counts, right?
Along with our orange and not so black fondue, we had hot diggity dog mummies, which are really hot dogs wrapped in crescent rolls. Last but not least were the pumpkin puff pastry bites. Thanks to the cayenne pepper I sprinkled on top, they looked at least a little orange. I guess the only thing that matters is how everything tasted and I'm pretty sure this Halloween feast was a success!
