Fry me a river
My well documented obsession with apple cider doughnuts has come to an end. A few weekends ago, I finally broke down and tried to make them. I found a recipe that didn't require an immersion blender, so I thought I would give it a try. I woke up one Saturday morning at 8 am and could think of nothing better to do than try my hand at frying dough in some hot oil. Well, two hours later, I had done just that.
The apple cider part involved reducing some cider to about 1/4 of a cup and I really don't think that you could taste it even then. I had to chill and re-chill and chill the dough one more time before I could finally use my martini glass and top of spice container cutting implements to make the doughnuts. Then came the tricky part... the flipping of the dough without splashing hot oil all over the place. Since I never seemed to master this procedure and the doughnuts kept coming out too doughy on the inside, I decided I should just stick with the doughnut holes and ended up breaking my beautifully shaped doughnuts into little pieces.
They were delicious, but still not as good as the ones I had eaten while apple picking. I think that some foods taste much better when you are not involved in their preparation. I'm still proud of my attempt though... and although I've cured my obsession for now, I'm already looking forward to next year's apple season.
