Falling

Today is the most gorgeous fall day in the history of fall days. Today is what you get when you look up "gorgeous fall day" in the dictionary. The sky is a clear blue; the leaves are golden yellow, bright orange, and fiery red; the air is crisp; and the sun is bright and warm. Today is what I was hoping Spike's and my wedding day would be like. The year I spent planning and imagining what the day would hold was filled with images of a day like today. We ended up having a perfect wedding... it was perfect because we became husband and wife. However, we didn't have perfect weather and it still makes me a little sad.

Fall is our favorite season, and it's not just because Spike likes the colder weather and I like apple cider doughnuts. We wanted to get married in the fall because of the foliage and the clear blue sky. Because of the crispness in the air and the smell of woodsmoke. Because of warm wooly sweaters and mugs of warm cider (with rum). Because we were going to be on a mountaintop and wanted to see vast expanses of foliage... or at least more than two feet in front of us, for goodness sake!

The bad weather on the wedding day was just "one of those things," but then the honeymoon took us to 90 degree temperatures, white sandy beaches, and bright blue water.... the opposite of fall. As much as we loved Mexico, we both missed fall! We were happy to come back and enjoy some fun fall activities and have spent the past month catching up on what we missed.I went on a fall adventure with my mother and hiked to a waterfall. Mom and I are starting an adventure series called Halfway Saturday, where we meet in the middle of Massachusetts and have some sort of adventure. On the first trip we met in Barre, went to a country store, saw a dam, went to a Farmer's Market, and trekked to a canyon.Spike and I took a ride out to apple country, where we stopped at an orchard for cider and were given complimentary cider doughnuts. We will definitely be going back next year.We celebrated Halloween with our annual Scary Movie Night with Rose and Aren. We tried to come up with some new Halloween-themed recipes, including the witches broomsticks featured above. We dressed up to hand out candy on Halloween (one of us more enthusiastically than the other). We carved our pumpkin, which turned out to be a cyclops because we're lazy. We also found out that wielding a large knife while handing out candy is a good way to discourage greedy trick or treaters from taking more than one piece of candy. We traveled back to 1830 on another Halfway Saturday trip when we met my mother in Sturbridge Village. The fall smell of woodsmoke was especially strong there for some reason!

With so many fun fall adventures with my new husband, how could I care about a silly little thing like bad weather on our wedding day?
