Spaghetti with a Spork
I read to a second grader every week at a nearby school while she eats her lunch. The program is called Power Lunch and the goal is to instill a love of reading in students enrolled in it. My student really enjoys her lunch and I sometimes have to suppress my gag reflex as she sprays food all over her shirt, the desk, the floor, and sometimes even me. She has difficulties with the lunch at times, but she is not at all helped by the utensils she is given. I'm sure I would find it hard to eat spaghetti with a spork too!
Last week we had our last reading session before summer vacation and we tried to fill out a worksheet supplied by the program coordinator. We have had some fun times this year and I though we had bonded a little, but when asked what her favorite part of Power Lunch is, she responded, "Eating!" That's fine, I like eating too! We read hundreds of books this year and although I don't expect her to remember all of them, it would be nice if she could recall some. However, she listed her favorite book as pizza and her favorite character as ketchup. It's okay... I understand. My reading must just not be as exciting as the challenge of eating with that spork!
