The winter seems long already. I know January is only halfway through, but we've already had two huge blizzards and I'm ready for Spring. Thankfully, New Year's Day was balmy and nice so much of the snow from the first storm melted. Spike and I drank mimosas and ate black eyed pea soup while practically sweating into the bowls. The warm temperatures didn't last long though, and we were back to a deep freeze soon after.
Last weekend, another storm was forecast, but it only amounted to a couple of inches. No big deal for us hearty New Englanders. But we couldn't be lulled into a false sense of s

ecurity as another storm was forecast for this past Wednesday. The meteorologists called for about a foot and blizzard conditions during the morning commute so everyone was hoping for a snow day. I called MIT's snow hotline at 5:20 in the morning only to hear that the Institute was open and operating as usual. I cursed and moaned while I called Spike's snow hotline and found out that he would be having a snow day. Extremely jealous, I gave MIT another try and was thrilled to find out that I too would be given the day off! Spike and I enjoyed the free day and watched three movies before venturing out to clean off the car.
The snow was super heavy and a pain in the butt to shovel. Cambridge seemed to agree with me and did a pretty crappy job of clearing the roads. The next morning, all of the slush was frozen solid and acted as speed

bumps on the streets. Snow in the city is just so different from snow in the country. There's no place to put it here and it just piles up into big brown mountains of ice. All of my moaning and groaning doesn't do any good, so I decided to do something about it. My friend Amanda had been talking about going cross country skiing, so I decided to join her on Saturday for a skiing adventure. The trails were crowded, but the conditions were perfect! It made me not wish for Spring quite so much... at least until the next storm.
