Spike and I are still working hard on our cityscape/skyline/whatever. He's starting to get worried because we're not actually using any gingerbread. But we're not making a house either. Isn't gingerbread just a euphemism for making something out of edible products? Just like how the people on the Cake Challenges on the Food Network sometimes don't actually use cake? Anyway, I guess we'll have to leave that up to the judges to decide.
We worked on the bridge and "ground" on Wednesday night. We made the bridge out of a Hershey bar stacked on some Rolos. Then we put the buildings together... it was a pretty nerve-wracking process as we weren't sure the decorations had solidified enough for us to handle them. They seemed to stay together pretty well though. Knock on wood!

We made Rice Krispy Treats and smeared them over the board as the ground. Then we made a mound for Beacon Hill and tried our best to mold some of the Treats into a base for the Hancock and Pru. We also molded some into a dome for the State House and stuck that on top of some mini candy bars. The biggest decision came in trying to decide whether or not to include the Esplanade. Since I'm a big user of the running paths, I felt it was essential to include it. Spike eventually agreed with me:

Last night we did some more work on the buildings and I frosted the dome of the State House. It's really hard to make yellow food coloring look gold. Especially when you use up all of your red food coloring every year making Red Velvet Cake! Once I had the yellow frosting, I decided to add some lines to the Mass Ave. Bridge and then thought we should include Storrow Drive and draw lines on that. Spike finished up the buildings and their tops and I made another little building out of the candy bars and a thin mint.

Tonight, we decorate. I think we're in pretty good shape for the competition tomorrow. But then again, I thought that last year too...
