TGFF (Thank Goodness for Futbol)

Thank goodness for the World Cup, to be more specific. It's been a week since the disastrous Game 7 of the NBA Finals, where the Celtics blew a fourth quarter lead to lose to the evil Lakers. It hurt. A lot. I love the Celtics and had been so caught up in the playoffs, the rivalries, the history, everything! The loss actually made me physically ill. My tummy hurt and I felt like someone had died... I was seriously more upset than I should have been.

Then, last Friday in the World Cup, I watched the USA come back from a two goal deficit in the second half. It was amazing and so exciting. But then they scored the third and winning goal only to have it disallowed by a bogus call I still don't understand. The game resulted in a tie, but it should have been a win! I wondered what was wrong with me and why every team I rooted for couldn't catch a break.

The USA's next game was against Algeria, a supposed easy victory, which would send them into the second round. If the USA tied or lost, they would be sent packing. It was one of the most frustrating games I've ever seen... attempt after attempt failed, shot after shot missed the net. They were getting chances, it just seemed it wasn't meant to be. But finally, some good sports karma kicked in... thank goodness for extra time! Landon Donovan took a rebound practically from the goalie's hands and put it away to win the game! I jumped out of my seat (at work), I was so ridiculously excited and thrilled! Now I am completely and totally caught up in World Cup hysteria. I watch all the games I can at work, I root for the underdogs, the teams with the jerseys I like the most, anyone... as long as they keep playing great soccer! Thank you, World Cup, for getting me out of my sports funk!
