Ice, Ice, Baby

The last week has been all about ice. After the excitement of the Bruins' win on New Year's Day, I spent the week pumped for my turn to enjoy outdoor hockey. But first, I was treated to a Bruins game courtesy of the Liberty Hotel and their awesome seats 15 rows back from the glass. I have to agree with my friend Courtney, who couldn't stop commenting on how big the players were. It was exciting to see professional hockey close-up, but the Bruins sure didn't play like a professional team. They looked more like the 1980 Olympic hockey team the first time they played the Russians. The final score wasn't that bad, but it still wasn't that great of a game.

The same can't be said for the BU vs. BC game at Fenway. Holy hannah.... it was amazing! Aunt Sue and Uncle George came over to Boston for the game and we all bundled up and headed over. Game time temperature was 17 degrees with a windchill of seven. Also, there was a light snowfall, which made the outdoor game seem even more awesome. When the snow hit the stadium lights, it looked like a full on blizzard. Luckily, we were sitting in the covered grandstand so only got a face full of snow when the wind blew. BU got out to a quick lead and was able to hold off the Eagles the entire game. There were a couple of close calls and it got a little nerve-wracking at the end, but the Terriers were able to come out with the victory!

Sunday was an even more amazing Frozen Fenway experience... Spike and I got to skate on the field! It was pretty chilly that day too, but the sun helped warm us up as we circled the rink. I finally found a way to get Spike to hold my hand in public. I just have to put him on skates! He did pretty well, but there were a couple of near misses. It was just so cool to be on not only the same ice where the B's, BU, and BC played, but on ice in the middle of Fenway Park! We sat in the penalty box and pretended to throw out some pitches as it was right next to the pitchers mound. We skated over by the scoreboard and pretended to catch a pop fly. It was fun and silly, but totally amazing at the same time....

Tuesday included even more skating as my mother and David came to visit and we tried out the Kendall Square Ice Rink. David and I had it to ourselves for awhile and it was fun trying tricks and attempting to skate the entire rink backwards. I made it without falling, but my legs were pretty sore after. It got more crowded as time went on and the skill level of all the skaters was pretty high. David and I were pretty tired, so we let the pros (show-offs) take over, but we'll be ready for next time!

Up next is a skating party at work, where we'll be able to use the MIT Rink for an hour during the work day. Not only am I anxious for any excuse to miss work, but I really love ice skating! I've been lucky to have so many opportunities to skate this year, but as David's old hockey skates left when David did, I think I'll switch back over to figure skates. Let's hope I remember how to use that toe pick!
