Mt. Greylock

Spike and I are getting married in a little over a month atop Mt. Greylock, which happens to be the tallest mountain in Massachusetts. When Spike proposed at the top of Mt. Kineo, I didn't really think we would have a whole mountain theme to our engagement/ wedding, but when I saw Bascom Lodge at the top of Mt. Greylock, I knew it was the place for us. The lodge is gorgeous with lots of rustic wood and stone. It's a beautiful building even if it wasn't on top of a mountain... that's just an added bonus. I had been up the mountain a bunch of times, but as there is a road leading to the top, I had never hiked it! Well, as soon as we decided to get married up there, I knew this had to change.

Poor Spike was dreading the climb as much as I was looking forward to it. He has bad knees and isn't as much in love with hiking as I am. The day was kind of gross - cloudy, misty, and humid - and to make matters worse, we were on a tight schedule as we needed to be back in Williamstown for a cake tasting at 2pm. We were accompanied by my Dad and his wife, Nan, and their two dogs, Finn and Hattie. Spike was worried about slowing them down, so he started out early on the gloomy July day. We thought we would catch up to him rather quickly because the trail was so steep and I was worried about his knees. I was dripping with sweat and could barely breathe, but Spike still eluded us. He must have run up the mountain because we didn't catch him until we reached a trail junction where he had stopped to wait for us. I guess we know who the real hiker in this relationship is... he was holding out on me!

When we finally reached the summit, we were met by a thick, dense fog which didn't allow us to see more than five feet in front of us. I was completely bummed by the weather, but glad that we made it! I'm hoping we use up our bad weather karma so that our wedding day is gorgeous and sunny. We walked around the summit for awhile and stopped in the lodge. We couldn't waste too much time though as we had to hurry back down for the cake. As we descended, the clouds started to break and Dad and Nan recommended that we take a little side trip over to a shoulder of Greylock for a nice view of the summit. It was gorgeous!

We looked back on the mountain we had just climbed with such a sense of accomplishment and I was so proud of Spike for climbing it! I can't wait to marry him on top of it on October 1st! Don't worry... we'll drive up.

Great to be hiking with you and to get a chance to spend some time with Spike. Thanks for suggesting it.
